Dominio del urogallo - asturias
Located in Asturias on the Atlantic coast of Spain, Dominio del Urogallo is a small estate owned and operated by Francisco Ascencio. Although Francisco did not found the estate, he took it over in 2017. Francisco is a man who likes a challenge and this definitely shines through in his wines.
The area is one which is rich in monastic tradition and wine has been made here for thousands of years. Because of its high altitude and cold climate, reaching maturity is always a challenge in Asturias. The estate practices biodynamic and organic viticulture although Francisco doesn’t feel the need for fancy certifications. Most of the neighboring estates and his winemaker-friends have called him crazy for not opting for conventional agriculture, but Francisco is a man of conviction and the results, well they speak for themselves. Moreover, minimal amounts and sometimes no sulfur whatsoever are added in his wines.
All of the varieties grown by the estate are indigenous and some of the vines are over 130-years-old resulting in very low yields and grapes of exceptional quality.
The wines of Dominio del Urogallo offer an elegance and finesse that one would not systemically attribute to Spanish wines at first thought. In fact, if tasted blind, one could easily jump to the conclusion that they were in Burgundy. If there is one word that best describes the estate’s wines it is “drinkable”. From the first sip you feel yourself wanting to go back for more.
We gladly introduce to the Quebec market, Dominio del Urogallo!
