thomas perseval - champagne
Located in the small village of Chamery on the Montagne de Rheims, the Thomas Perseval estate posesses 2.5 hectares of vines and produces a mere 12,000 bottles per year.
Thomas Perseval is part of the new wave of young winemakers that are crafting site-driven Champagnes. In fact, we are witnessing a revolution in Champagne as consumers are shifting away from the big brand champagne houses to small independent wineries which grow their own grapes or récoltants-manipulants as it is known in French.
All of Thomas’ grapes are sourced from 4 premier-cru sites: La Masure, La Pucelle, Le Village and Le Hazat. Moreover, Thomas works with only three varietals: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
After studying winemaking in the early 2000s, Thomas returned to his family estate and launched his own project in 2009. Since 2012, the estate has carried organic certification. No pesticides or fertilizers are are used in his vineyards. Keeping true to his non-interventionist thinking, all his wines are zero-dosage meaning that at the time of corking, no sugar is added. Sulfite levels are always kept to a minimum. In fact, all of Perseval’s Champagnes have sulfite levels under 30 mg/L. Thomas describes his philosophy in the cellar as being “laissez-faire”.
A portion of Thomas’ vins clairs are barrel aged which provides his Champagnes with an extra creaminess on the palate not to mention added layers of complexity.
We believe that Thomas Perseval is crafting some of the most unique and terroir-driven Champagnes and could not be happier to serve as his exclusive importer in the province of Quebec.
